In the Gospel reading for Sunday and the coming weeks we will hear parables of Jesus in which the main character is a King or landowner. It is a testament to the church’s historically close relationship with state – even here in America – that we naturally assume the King or landowner is the symbolic stand-in for God in the story.
When we make such suppositions are we not missing the invitation at the heart of the Gospel to be more reflective in seeing – and then challenging – cultural norms? Can we hear and respond to Jesus’ invitation to study Scripture, culture and ourselves more deeply to learn more fully where God dwells in us and how we live in God?
