Pentecost 5 – June 24th – Losing our life to find it for others
In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus calms the storm on the lake. We usually interpret this by saying Jesus will take care of us and make everything well. This is, as we say, so not the point!
There certainly are storms on our lake. There are fears, dangers, injustices and threats in our world, and it is true we ask God to intervene to keep us safe. But Jesus challenges us to let go of our fear, and to put our trust in God: as he will say on numerous occasions, we must lose our lives in this world to gain our life in the Kingdom.
This is neither easy nor intuitive, but it is compelling. We want to be in the divine life, in God’s reality and when we get a glimpse of the Christ path we know we want to be on it. So, we look for the signs and being part of church is a big part of how we find our way.
